CBRG Account Charges
Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine (WIMM) - The WIMM makes a service charge of £200 per capita for all researchers in the Institute to help fund the CBRG, so there is no
additional charge for WIMM scientists to open a CBRG account.
Other Departments - A charge of £600 for each account/username with the CBRG will be invoiced annually for users
outside the WIMM. A reminder with the option to continue the subscription to the molbiol service will be sent one month prior to
the account expiry date. Failure to take up this option will mean the account will be suspended.
Changes to the charging structure - 2007
The following message from the CBRG Steering Committee concerning changes to the charging structure for CBRG accounts was sent
to all current CBRG account holders outside the WIMM in 2007.
June 18th, 2007:
From, The CBRG Steering Committee
Professor Andrew McMichael, Professor Doug Higgs, Professor Chris Newbold, Professor Neil Barclay, Dr Nigel Saunders, Dr Richard Mott, Lynne Hughson
As you know, over the past few years the Computational Biology Research Group (CBRG) has developed a comprehensive and innovative support
service for all aspects of bioinformatics (e.g. sequence analysis, microarrays, proteomics, database construction, training etc) and this has
been very successful, accommodating all members of the WIMM, the Dunn School and the Medical Sciences Division with over 400 users. Given
the increasing importance of bioinformatics in current biology we plan to continue developing the service further in the coming years to
accommodate new applications (e.g. genome wide ChIP-chip data and high throughput Solexa and GS FLX (454) sequencing). Having a central
core of expertise results is an efficient and economic way to gain access to state-of-the art bioinformatics without major investments and
duplication of effort.
As we are moving to Full Economic Costing the CBRG will be changing the way that this activity is funded. The WIMM will continue to
run this as a core activity based on a top-sliced payment from all members, thus contributing about 50% of the running costs. From July
31st all other users from the Sciences in Oxford will be required to pay £600 per individual user account per year for full access to
this service. This includes the following:-
- Up to 10 hours per annum of one on one consultancy time, email and telephone support with expert advice on bioinformatics, custom scripting, database design etc.
- A secure backed up workspace to store and analyse data on powerful computers
- Over 200 bioinformatics programs (and any more that you ask to install)
- Access to all major bioinformatics databases
- A place to store and analyse your microarray data
- Proteomics analysis tools and databases
- Free admission to all CBRG bioinformatics training courses
In addition to these in-house services members of the CBRG have extensive working knowledge of the ever-expanding bioinformatics resources
on the web and can advise on the use of such tools for individual projects. The cost of obtaining full access to this service would represent
a very small proportion of most research grants and funding bodies almost always accept this small additional cost, which is easily justified.
Therefore we would encourage all users and participating groups to offset the cost by adding the access charges to future grant requests. If
you require larger projects or if you are unsure about how much bioinformatics support please contact the CBRG team for further advice.
As an existing user for continued to access your account you must sign up now using the account application form.
Importantly, if you take no action by 31st July 2007 then, unfortunately, we will have to close your account. If you are based in the WIMM and
have received this email you should inform us of your change of location - no other action is required.
We very much hope that you will wish to continue using this service and look forward to interacting with you in the future.
